People often seem to have something they’d like to change about themselves, thinking that doing so would make them happier. Sometimes, however, happiness is more about being grateful for what one has rather than dwelling on what one doesn’t have. Here are some ways to pay attention to the positives this year, in order to be the best version of you.

Don’t Try to Please Anyone but Yourself

Many people live their lives trying to please their parents, impress their significant other, or win the approval of someone they admire. If you really want to come into your own and tap into your fullest potential, focus on the things that you want to accomplish and forget about doing what others think you should do.

Pursue Your Passions

Pursing your passion doesn’t necessarily mean you should quit your day job to chase your dream. It does mean getting involved in things that make you happy and make you feel unique. Whether you accomplish that by taking up a hobby or trying out for the local theater company, identify the things you’re passionate about and take the steps to bring those things into your life. This is fundamental for becoming a better “you.”

Concentrate on Your Health

Being in good health is all about having a reservoir of energy and vigor, both physically and mentally. “Fatigue makes cowards of us all” goes the saying. The more energy you have, the better equipped you’ll be to achieve your goals. If you’re constantly wiped out because you’re not in shape or because you eat poorly, make a change.

Be Patient with Yourself

One of the greatest pitfalls that many people fall into is becoming disappointed with themselves for not doing better. Everyone is a “work in progress” so it’s important to keep this in mind as you take steps toward self-improvement. If something isn’t working out, think it through and then try a different approach. Most importantly, do your best, be yourself, and give yourself time to accomplish the goals you’ve set for yourself.

Be Grateful for the Things You Have

When striving for personal betterment, it’s easy to lose sight of what you have or the progress you’ve made. Taking time out to remind yourself of your qualities and your accomplishments is crucial. This gives you perspective and keeps you centered. Most important of all, it keeps you focused on the positive.

Becoming the best possible “you” requires a combination of mental discipline, emotional balance, and physical energy. If you can bring these things into alignment, there’s nothing that can stop you from realizing your true potential.
